Us probing whether airlines collude to keep airfares high has been a contentious topic for decades, particularly since some airlines lobbied for the passage of the 1986 law.
For years, critics of the law’s impact have noted a rise in the number of complaints involving low fares. Airline employees, many who received severance payments for years after the agency implemented the rule, have argued the high cost of operating airlines meant it was hard for many airlines to afford to maintain services and other expenses they didn’t earn from passenger miles or services beyond the airport.
“We think airfares go up because of the cost of operating these airlines, but there’s some evidence the problem lies in the way they are managed,” David Smith, who heads the nonprofit nonprofit Citizens United and has been fighting to remove airfare costs from passenger제천출장안마 prices, said.
Some airline industry officials say the price of fuel doesn’t tell the whole story. “That doesn’t really take into account cost overruns,” said Matthew Barrows, who directs the aviation research center at Purdue University.
And while other groups have argued that deregulation of the oil and gas industries may be in store, some consumer advocates say it’s worth doing if Congress is serious about dealing with the cost of fuel.
“We have the tools to reduce oil prices. We don’t have the tools to bring them back down to pre-2008 levels or even to what they were in 2002,” said Tom Laughlin, president of the National Association of Convenience Stores and the International Council on Shopping Centers, which opposed deregulation before it was rolled back by the law’s passage in 1986.
Laughlin, a former chief executive of the retail giant Home Depot and the parent company of the nation’s biggest department stores, says the costs to customers were never the biggest problem with higher fuel prices. “We were in a great recession and gas prices, if you’re going to blame it on high gas prices you’ve got to talk about the price of everything,” he said.
Laughlin says consumers were also more exposed to the high price of gasoline because they had to pay higher fees. He estimates that fuel c아산출장안마osts for a gas-powered vehicle are equivalent to about $3.00/gallon in cities like Miami and Phoenix.
For a time, Airline Wholesalers Association spokesman John Smith said, the high prices hurt the airline business directly, which means that it’s the carriers that lose money and can’t afford to operate more pl김천출장마사지anes. But those costs, he said, are likely to drop from the curren
